Candle Care & Safety

At Farmland Cottage Candle Company, we craft our candles with the highest quality ingredients to ensure a beautiful, clean burn. Because candles involve an open flame, safety is our top priority. Please read and follow these essential guidelines to protect your home and get the most out of your candle.

The Golden Rule of Candle Care

Trim the Wick: Before every single burn, trim your candle wick to 1/4 inch. You can use a wick trimmer, nail clippers, or scissors. This prevents the flame from growing too large, eliminates black soot, and extends the total life of your candle.

Safe Burning Practices

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always extinguish your candle before leaving the room or going to sleep.
  • Keep away from combustibles. Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from curtains, bedding, books, paper, and drafts.
  • Keep out of reach. Always burn candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Avoid drafts. Keep burning candles away from open windows, ceiling fans, and strong air currents to prevent uneven burning and flare-ups.

Maximizing Your Candle's Life

  • The First Burn Matters: When lighting your candle for the very first time, allow it to burn until the wax melts completely across to all edges of the jar (usually 2 to 3 hours). This prevents "tunneling," where the wax burns down the center and wastes the rest of the candle.
  • Don't Overburn: Do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. The glass can become dangerously hot, and the wick may become unstable.
  • Know When to Say Goodbye: Discontinue use and extinguish your candle when only 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. Burning a candle past this point can cause the glass to overheat and crack.

How to Extinguish Safely

  • Use a Snuffer or Lid: The safest way to extinguish a candle is with a candle snuffer or by gently placing the heat-resistant lid back on the jar. This prevents hot wax from splattering and minimizes smoke.
  • Never Use Water: Never use water to extinguish a candle. Water can cause hot wax to splatter and may shatter the glass jar.
  • Check the Wick: Ensure the candle is completely out and the wick ember is no longer glowing before walking away. Do not move or touch the candle until the wax has fully cooled and solidified.
